Weather Direct shipped in 2008 as, by the company’s own account, the world’s first internet-powered personal weather system: connected hardware, the hosted service behind it, and the recurring subscription that paid for it. A full year before the first iPad, five years before anyone in the building said Internet of Things. La Crosse Alerts followed in 2013.

Interactive point-of-sale and instructional videos, online and at national retailers: Home Depot, Best Buy, Walmart. Built a render farm for 3D frames: distributed compute, bottlenecks, and managing corrupted frames arriving from random nodes primed me for thinking about the challenged of managing compute at scale.

First webmaster, UW System

wisconsin.edu

The first webmaster the UW System administration ever hired, starting late 1998. Negotiated the wisconsin.edu domain away from Learning Innovations, built the first full version of the flagship site and the first system-wide content management system, and moved the administrative record off print. Helped coordinate the first Wisconsin Economic Summit, filmed it on MiniDV, and published play-by-play coverage to wisconsin.edu.

Document digitization at production scale: thousands of pages scanned, compiled, made searchable, and shipped online, on CD, and on DVD. Produced the Dodge Ram body shop repair guide in Macromedia Director.

First business

Founded a vinyl sign company: semi trailers, banners, plywood signs, vehicle lettering, magnetics, window and door graphics. Clients ran from the US Marine Corps to Taco John’s. Built the shop’s website, the start of serious web coding.
